Barb Harmatys

Thursday, 10 May 2012 at 07:00 PM

Barb is a local musician who lives in the Tofield area. She grew up loving the folk greats of the 70's and although she has written some songs, prefers to play covers of her favorite folk artists of the past, as well as some of the new talent she's discovered in recent years.

Barb has been very involved in music for a number of years. She created and hosted 'Open Stage for the Middle Aged' at the Kingman Teahouse in order to fuel her love of the coffee house scene. Middle aged musicians (and those who just wanted to listen to some great music), met at the teahouse once a month to play and jam with each other. There was a core group of musicians that met there for many years.

Barb was co-creator and musician/comedic actor at 'Tofield's Little Ole' Opry', which entertained the residents in Tofield and the surrounding area. It soon caught on and people started to come from Edmonton and other neighboring towns to take part in a fun-filled evening of music and comedy.
Barb has played at local events for a number of years and was asked to perform at a Gala event that was held to celebrate Tofield's 100 year anniversary. Premier Ed Stelmach and other dignitaries attended that event.

In recent years she has simplified her life and just wants to play for the love of playing. Young at heart at 53 years, she is excited to get back to her coffee house roots.

Image and video hosting by TinyPicI lived in Nova Scotia most of my life and moved to Alberta five years ago. Live performing is one of my greatest loves along with writing, composing and recording. I spent many years performing at festivals, pubs, and lounges back home and after a short break decided to call Calgary home and have begun playing live venues again on a regular basis. I hope to release a CD of original material later this year. It, like my repertoire will cover a wide range of styles and topics. I play mostly within the folk/rock and folk styles.

Windborn

Thursday, 22 March 2012 at 07:00 PM

Windborn is acoustic alternative music like you've never heard it before. Driven by powerful vocals, unique guitar licks and hand percussion, Windborn is breaking ground with a style of it's own. Windborn is Jeff Pike's solo acoustic project but he is often joined by a hand percussionist for live performances. The best description given to Windborn after a concert was, "jazz metal that you would listen to by a fire". This may not be the most accurate description of Windborn's music but it does go to show how broad a spectrum the music of Windborn seems to reach.

Jeff has been writing, recording and performing music since 1998. In 2007 Jeff decided to start focusing on more of a solo approach making his music under the name of Windborn. His long history in Alberta's hard rock scene is evident in his music today giving him a style and sound that has opened the doors to every type of venue. His over 500 concerts have fallen evenly between coffee shops, cafe's, pubs, music venues and festivals all over western Canada. You are just as likely to find Jeff sharing the stage with full rock bands as you are to find him sharing the stage with singer-songwriters and folk artists.

Jeff has opened for musicians such as Matthew Barber, Jon and Roy and The Set and has played the Pop Okanagan festival, Kelowna fusion festival, Shake the Lake in Sylvan Lake, AB and Serenity Performing arts in Clearwater, BC. He has played 2 Canada day performances in Kelowna in front of thousands and 4 other parks alive performances.

Matt Beckler

Thursday, 25 August 2011 at 07:00 PM

Matt Beckler Matt Beckler's music does not subscribe to one genre. A folk element lies at the core of his songs, surrounded by myriads of influences, layering the context of each album. As the music ebbs and flows, the listener is drawn steadily through sonic landscapes, subtle and lush. Matt draws his inspiration from many different places - Dylan, the delta blues, ambient noise - yet there is a defining congruency to each project, leading the listener to a new place every time, both lyrically and musically. His unmistakable voice provides a common thread in an outpouring of honest, contemplative, unique songwriting.

Currently Kelly works with her contemporary vocal quartet, Bella Rouge, who perform a variety of cover tunes that encompass all genres. Her unique take on cover tunes exhibit her talent to arrange any style of song and make it her own. Her venture with Bella Rouge has been a successful one and has enabled performances in New Orleans, New York, St. Louis, Hawaii and Los Angeles. Josh Gillingham is a twenty year old western Canadian singer/songwriter. Brought up in a musical family, he learned piano and trombone before taking his first guitar lesson. Several years of speaking in hammer-ons, power chords and punk rock progressions gave him time to develop a style of his own, emerging, surprisingly, as funky acoustic folk rock. Coupled with his vocal background in church, choral, popular, jazz and musical theatre styles, his earthy guitar sounds create a powerful wind behind the sails of his politically, relationally, and spiritually inspired lyrics. Josh’s musical interests and influences are so varied that a short bio does not suffice to cover them (and might also give grounds for a bi-polar disorder diagnosis...), but he must give a special shout out to his dad, his mom, and his brother who have walked with him a million miles and back as he continues his journey of creation, inspiration, and divine revelation through music.

Erin Mulcair

Thursday, 18 November 2010 at 07:00 PM

Erin Mulcair is an Edmonton based vocalist who studied music at Grant MacEwan University. Erin has performed her original music throughout Edmonton and released her first demo, ‘Sunrise’, in July 2010.

Music began for Erin when she was young by singing in choirs, jamming with her brothers, and diving into musical theatre. Over the years she grew to adore Ella Fitzgerald, Regina Spektor, Feist, and Tierney Sutton. Her voice has a ...jazz-folk edge to it, and if Erin could say one thing about her music she would say that it always takes her to new levels, strengthens her faith, and is the pouring out of her whole self.

Paul Cresey

Thursday, 04 November 2010 at 07:00 PM

Paul Cresey has been called an old soul in a young body because his lyrics portray feelings way beyond his years. How else would someone who was born in 1989 be able to write with passion about historical events in the first person?

Emotional songs are to be felt not heard, that is why Paul places strong feelings in each and every song, spread out for everyone to experience, hence the title of his first album "Piece the Picture".

Independent reviewer Peter McGee for Bluesbunny has said of one of Paul's songs, "Sinners and Saints": "It is here that the album seeps a modicum of Cresey's true talent. Above diligent picking Cresey explores the soul of a lover." CKUA Radio in their online newsletter (Mar.17,08) has written, "Whatever Neil Young, Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan have, Paul Cresey has IT too."

Derek Gust

Thursday, 14 October 2010 at 07:00 PM

Derek’s greatest passions are cheap theatres, long distance frisbeeing and sharing the gospel and good music to his own kind, teenagers. (And all ages for that matter.) And although he gets to do the last two rocking out on the big lake bass in the award winning band “Junkyard Poets” his love for song writing and singing led him to put out his own solo cd, the mirror. To create his feel good music live, he is accompanied by the sax, flute, upright, and brushes while he runs around between guitars, piano and the odd big lake bass when things are really feeling groovy. Like a hyper Jack Johnson perhaps? He’s always making sure the audience is receiving plentiful doses of fun, while at the same time being inspired and challenged in the areas of love, relationships and faith. He writes in one song encouragingly, “if He can move the mountains, then I know He can move our hearts.” Derek with the Junkyard Poets has toured with the grammy nonimated Newsboys and has opened for many bands such as Hawk Nelson. He has also played bass for many artists including the groovy Juno award winning Greg Sczebel.

Pre/Post

Thursday, 07 October 2010 at 07:00 PM

pre/post is a collaborative project lead by Edmonton’s Mat Halton. Roughly defined, it is pop rock with an urban vibe - strong melodies are set over electronic and acoustic rhythms. Programming/keys is provided by brother Jonathan Halton, drums by Tyrn Armstrong, and bass by Ryan Miller.

Thematically, pre/post is about advocacy for youth. As a Child and Youth Care worker, Mat’s music is a platform to tell of their strength and resilience; pre/post’s urban feel is a shout-out to the teens that have changed his life...

"We came together as a trio in the latter half of 2009 and have been practicing and playing like crazy ever since! Ian kinda got us together, but it's playing the music that keeps us together. We're all orginally from different places in Ontario, but are now all devout Albertans. Ian and Rick have played guitar since their teens and Cindy's been singing since she could swing around the support pole in the basement near Dad on the piano. All of us love to sing and enjoy working on harmonies and doing the occasional a cappella song."

Joshua Gillingham

Thursday, 08 July 2010 at 07:00 PM

Josh GillinghamJosh Gillingham is a twenty year old western Canadian singer/songwriter.

Ky Babyn & Tatam Reeves

Thursday, 03 June 2010 at 07:00 PM

Ky Babyn"Ky Babyn brings a rowdy performance that will have you stomping your feet and shaking the tables. This rural Alberta boy sings about swinging hammers and drinkin' whiskey with an intense percussive, yet poetic lyrical style. Born and bred in St. Paul, Alberta, he has passionately pursued performing in music and dance. Upon relocating to Edmonton, Ky focused on the backwoods of his upbringing. Now composing timeless songs woven with the stories of olden days, he is lyrically driven and sure to inspire. His music features infectious hooks backed by a gunfighter guitar tone reminiscent of the wild west. Generating rhythms of the railway with harmonica and guitar in hand, Ky echoes the soul and sound of a home grown Canadian song writer.

Tatam ReevesStraight from the heart, Tatam displays a unique sound consisting of acoustic and vocal melodies intertwining to create something you may not of heard before, but will always remember. Born in Edmonton, Tatam spent the majority of his life with a guitar in his hands, and over the past year and a half has taken his craft to a new level, developing life's light and shadow into an adventurous account of the tremorous beauty buried deep within emotion.
